we’re moving to north carolina!

mountains are calling by bonnie christine
i've been wanting to share this news for a while and the time has finally come. the mountains are calling us home and we're moving back to north carolina!

we have absolutely loved living in california for the last year and a half and though it will be hard to leave, it will be equally exciting for us to move back home. in short, my husband had the opportunity to transfer to an office in brevard, nc- one of our favorite places on earth (and only 20 mins from asheville)! to top it off, it's only about an hour from where all four of our parents and both of our sisters live. it's perfect!

we've already found our new home and it fell into our laps similar to how the last one did. we feel incredibly blessed to have discovered a sweet mountain retreat backed up right to the pisgah national forest. it has large windows, a vaulted ceiling and plenty of room to spread our wings (you'll start seeing bits and pieces of it soon, i'm sure!).

so we're packing up this weekend and plan to begin our cross country journey a week from today. after 3 days of travel we'll arrive at our new humble abode and be greeted with warm hugs from family and friends.

living in california has been a dream and something we will never forget. to be honest, it feels like we've been on vacation for the last 18 months! somehow though, it just never felt like home. mostly because our families aren't here, but also because it's just not familiar territory. i have a lot of feelings wrapped up in these two states, both of which i plan to share with you in the next few days.

until then, bonnie (photograph by me)

  • Awe, good for you~ There’s no place like home. (AND beautiful North Carolina!) Safe travels :)

  • Wow! nice to hear that. I am right now in the opposite situation. We are moving from the islands to the mainland (Barcelona) and will start a new life there, away from family and friends but also at only 1 hour by plane. At the beginning it was difficult to imagine us living there but now I already accepted the fact and I am even excited about creating a new routine there.
Your enthusiasm inspires me and I will continue following you to find about your adventure parallel to mine.

  • So happy for you! The mtns are like family aren’t they?! I miss living in western MT :)

  • It’s a very nice news! I am happy for you

  • I’m so excited for you, Bonnie! Praying God’s blessing as you begin this journey!

  • congrats on the move! we just moved from ny to cali (for work and to be closer to family) and i won’t lie…it’s FANTASTIC to be so close to everyone! wishing you and your man all the best on this new adventure! xoxo

  • I feel so happy for you. I am from a super small town in east TN and I am so homesick. I have been living in Saudi for like 5 years now and I feel like it gets harder and harder. I am just a small town Southern girl and I am sad being far away. All my family live by one another. I am glad you get to go home though trust me I know the feeling :)

  • That is such great news and I’m so jealous! North Carolina is one of my most favorite places on earth! Cannot wait to see pics of the new place. Blessings! :)

  • Bonnie, I’ve followed GHTR for so long now, but nothing has touched me more than this. I grew up in San Diego, and now live in Alabama. Though I love things about the South, I find myself missing California so much. I’m so glad that you had the opportunity to experience life on the West Coast, and now get to return home with that experience. Each place we live leaves a new impression on us, I think, so each place is valuable in its own way. Cheers for the future!

  • So exciting! I love the Tar Heel State! Good luck this week!

  • Oh I meant to tell you that my family and I lived in Greensboro for awhile my brother was even born there.

  • I read this when you originally posted, but was thinking about it today so I tracked it down again. We are actually in transition back TO California, our home, that we left over 5 years ago to try out life in Colorado. I can totally relate to your words, how it’s felt like a long vacation and a fun adventure, but never truly home. We are moving for the same reason, to be close to our families, but to say we are handling the process of waiting (on jobs, homes, etc) well would be a lie… this is the hardest test of patience we’ve experienced, but I love how you describe the peace and ‘knowing’ you’ve felt as you make your journey home. Can’t wait to see more of your new mountain retreat!

    • aw, thanks for commenting hailey! it feels so good to connect with people going through the same thing. i will always deeply miss some things about california, but there will never be a place like home. best of luck and i hope you have a smooth transition! xo
